But Erin, if they don't read it, what happens?

I disagree. Maybe I am just old-fashioned or polite, but I like cover letters. I think they are a nice way of saying to the hiring person, "Hello! Here is a little bit about me before you get to every accomplishment I can add to the resume..." Cov…

Connie, Laura, Thanks for your comments, a lot of food for thought... Laura, I think the time spent on cover letters is far too much...I spoke to many recruiters over the past years and all the feedbacks are the almost the same, they don't read them…

I think it's more a question of "what form does your cover letter take?" based on the expectations of recruiters in our multi-faceted and fickle working world. - Email says, "I respect your time so I'm making this quick and easy." - Social networki…

Laurent, Interesting post and definitely a great point about the time spent networking, which is invaluable given the level of competition at this point. I have to say that in my recruiting days, I rarely even glanced at a cover letter. However, w…

Gary, that is a real question: how many? If for example you spend 2 hours on cover letters every day, and that 1 in 100 recruiters really read the cover letter, what would you advise? But thanks for the comment, Gary, because it is still accurate, t…

I'm torn on this one, personally. While I do agree that time could be spent in more productive ways, we still see tons of positions being posted with cover letters requested. Now, perhaps that's due to the audience (I work at a university with stude…

I totally agree...it seems that recruiters are the biggest offenders of this. They want to connect to you so they can get an in w/ your contacts, but yet they rarely, if at all return the favor. Personally, I've found Twitter to be much more helpful…
