I know this hiring manager who posted a job opening for an Admin. The reason this position was posted was because this hiring manager was overwhelmed. She had more work than she could handle and was in dire need of support.
This hiring manager works for a small company without a Human Resource department. She was shocked when she heard that the job was going to be posted on a job board with her name as the contact person. How was she going to field all the resumes and calls she was goi

Everywhere I turn I cannot get away from the ever evolving trend of the social networking process for job searches. Countless comments and posts speaking to the rage and what it does for recruiters and job seekers. The issue I keep finding myself looking at is the lack of a detailed strategy. How do you leverage these networks? What is the best way to connect and get tied into a company you want to work for? What if you do not have a job - how do you use these tools to land your next position? T…

Targeted Job Search can be focused on an industry (such as today) or a functional role (such as an Engineer). One thing to remember is not to rule out any industry if your job function spans industries (such as Finance, Sales, Marketing, etc.). While it is easier to get a job in an industry where you already have experience, you should also be open minded to other industries.
Continuing the Targeted Job Sea…

The first six posts on this topic covered (in order of appearance) Fortune's Most Admired Companies (and we will continue in this post as well). But what about your most admired companies? Not your specific list, but what if you wanted to create a list based on your criteria? You can do this too, off of Fortune's list (see the first bullet below).

Fast is good, especially when you're talking about a company's growth. It's even better when you are looking for a job (and you land one). We continue on our review of Fortune's Fastest Growing Companies where we left off last time. From the entire list, you can see a trend for sure. The post's companies include Crane manufacturing to lots of Oil and Gas S…

Amazingly, this is my 200th post! Thanks to those who have been dedicated readers.
Deciding which job search sites to use is as clear as mud. There are hundreds of search sites, some of which are scams, some of which are a waste of time and some of which are actually quite good if you know what you are looking for. While I try to point out the sites that I think are a waste of time or are scams, it is not a…

A new topic for this blog, Office Support. What, you may ask, is Office Support? Office Support includes executive and admin assistants, Processing Clerks, Customer Service and Receptionists to name a few. I will use this post to remind everyone that it is not just the recruiters, job search boards, networking and company career sites you should be leveraging. You should also leverage industry associations a…

One more post after this one and we will have covered all 100 of the Best Companies to Work for from Fortune.com's list. Five more for you on this post and it is a fairly good mix of companies (most of which you've probably heard of). Not that losing a job is a good opportunity, but it is certainly a time to th…

Okay, so you've used a bazillion job search sites and the jobs that come up in the search are not in your city, what a waste of time. But you can target your search for the town, city and state where you live (or want to work). There are several ways to do this and we will cover some of these on today's post. Last time we covered this topic (…

So what's so special about targeted search engines? Well for one, they help you focus on positions that are likely to match your experience (and, therefore, you should get a higher hit rate). Although not always the rule of thumb, they tend to be part of the "road less traveled" (which means that less people are looking at these sites). Probably most important is that they provide a different view which shou…

We've had a number of posts on "the best companies to work for" which should help you focus your job search. But how do the companies rate that are not on the list? In fact, what do the people who actually work at these companies have to say? Every company, even the "best companies to work for" has their share of disgruntled employees, but you may want to find other sources when researching companies in your…

Criminal Justice is a career category we've not covered before in this blog. What does it include? ATF Agents, CIA/FBI Agents, Corrections Officers, Police Officers, Criminologists, US Marshall, etc. Today's post will cover a few search options. A reminder that the full range of job functions exist within Criminal Justice (like administrative assistants, financial analysists, etc.).

It's funny how events can so quickly change our views on topics that seemed iron-clad when first presented. What I'm thinking about, specifically, are financial services firms (many of whom are no longer with us) and the general public view of Banks, Brokerage Firms and Insurance Companies. The Most Admired List includes companies from some of these industries, but not every company in these industries had t…

Targeted job search by industry / job function seems to be a favorite, so I will continue today with the Energy Industry. I've probably mentioned at least a dozen times that there are many job functions in each industry. As an example, you may be an accountant or a risk manager who specializes in the Energy Industry or is looking to get into a different field in your job fun…

So where are we in the recession life-cycle? Not sure that anyone really knows the answer yet, but we are all hoping that we are about at bottom and this recent quiet period is not just a temporary lull in the downward spiral. That being said, jobs will still be lost - especially in the automotive related industries. So hopefully the fastest growing companies are the fastest at job creation too. Picking up w…

There are so many job boards out there (and more every day) it's sometimes hard to pick the ones that will work for you. As I've mentioned in previous posts, you should pick a handful (5 or so) job boards that work for you (don't try to use them all). One of your handful should be one that you alternate with a list of sites you've either not tried or do not have frequent updates.
