The best way to introduce yourself to a company that doesn’t appear to be actively looking is to know the “
What, where and
how you can help the company”. I can give you a better-than-even chance to get the door to open to be able to introduce yourself, perhaps even create a job that is just right for you. It will take time and careful preparation but it will pay a dividend.
Step 1 – Functional strengths: Begin by listing all your functional strengths across the top of a she…

There are most certainly jobs available right now. Just not the ones you want. For the next year, things don't look like they are going to get any better.
Some of the worst hit by the job losses over the past year are mid to senior level managers...those making $60K+ a year. It is also this group of people who are ill-prepared to seek employment. They have not had to search in a while. A large number of them also are 50+ years of age. Their values, dreams and goals did not include looking for w…

An Easy 5-Step Method for Choosing a Major & Ultimately Defining Future Job Satisfaction
Start with the end in mind. As with writing a speech, you determine what your objective is and what you want your audience to have when they leave the auditorium and THEN you begin to write your speech, make sense? Same with the job search and too, picking a major, internships, related clubs and activities, and more: You begin with the end in mind
Every step you take, even in the moment,…

You're job search is not doomed but without networking you are doomed to suffer a longer more difficult one.
Although networking is important it is only one piece in a multiple-channel job search marketing strategy. You help yourself best by working ALL your channels. Some other channels are,
· Online networking portholes such as LinkedIn, Facebook and MySpace;
· Recruiters and Search Firms;
· Job sites such as Indeed, Ladders and CareerBuilder;
· Targeted mailing and Informational I…

During this recession, there has been much discussion of the exorbitant salaries paid to executives. CEOs of failed companies are walking away secure, while the employees of these companies are losing their shirts, or rather, their homes.
According to The Corporate Library, CEOs’ salaries fell last year
for the first time in the previous six…

Show me someone who hasn’t fantasized getting in the car and leaving it all behind and I’ll show you someone who doesn’t drive. The banks are a mess, credit is awful, the U.S auto industry is a mess, unemployment is climbing still, we’re all out of money, gas prices are on the rise again … oh yeah … and according to the G-8 Summit our planet is melting!
Many people mistakenly assume if a company is not actively looking for someone then a job isn’t available. The experience of many job-hunters m…

I've written about Portfolio careers before and I was asked the other day how to go about starting a portfolio.
Before we go there, let me say, it may not be for everyone. Here are some characteristics of people who might do well pursuing this type of option. The list comes from
Portfolio Careers
Self-starters
Excellent time managers who organize their lives very well

The job search and better yet the career path that one takes has a genuine undertone that I think inevitably shapes the thoughts and minds of the seeker. That is the person’s passion. Passion is under-used criteria in the search process as most people think that passion is lost when they need to “grow up” and move out into the world. I researched passion and this is what I found “Passion can be expressed as a feeling of unusual excitement, enthusiasm or compelling emotion towards a subject, idea…

Over time it has become apparent in reading and listening to people within organizations that a sense or lack of manager care is constant in the work place. Management, both executive and supervisory, are pressed with the bottom line offering little consciousness of the impact. Expecting more and demanding more, employees become less and less engaged. They work endless hours to serve “the man” just in the hopes that they will keep their job in the sliding economy. The downward pressure continues…

I read a recent article about the art of confidence and how one is to garner it. Take a look at the post on The Career Encouragement blog. I noticed as I was reading the post that places together a
quick list of ways to gain self confidence that something was missing. The list of ways to gain self confidence did not cover what I think is the number 1 reason and m…

I am not sure how many articles I have read over the past months talking about the greed of the CEO and executive leadership even amongst the constant layoffs that our nation is experiencing. In my reading of some of the other blogs, there was a discussion surrounding if there was a suitable alternative to layoffs. I gave some thoughts however did not have a real practical or example of a company that has implemented cost cutting in the face of layoffs to reverse the trend. One has surfaced.

Online branding is becoming one of the critical components of the job search process. Part I of “Coping with a Really bad boss,” I talked about the Reprobate and how he stormed around the office cursing and threatening to fire us all depending on what he’d had for lunch. Not only was he verbally abusive, but he once asked a female colleague to try on a bikini in the office so he could determine whether or not she would be an “appropriate” model for one of our bikini wax products. By EEOC (The U.S. Eq…

It is hard to imagine a job seeker today who isn’t on Twitter. Like LinkedIn, it is rapidly becoming a must-do social networking tool. And also like LinkedIn, it is rapidly becoming a popular hangout for job seekers.
Unlike LinkedIn, however, Twitter moves at a strange pace. It isn’t just about adding contacts you’ve worked with in the past or with whom you have had some connection. Twitter is mostly about making new friends, be it socially, professionally, or both.
At first it can be a confus…

Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn...by now you have probably been exposed to at least one, if not more, of these sites. If you've been keeping up with the latest job search news, you've also probably been bombarded with cries to "network, network, network." Well, networking itself is obviously not new, but social networking or social media sites like LinkedIn (and NoddlePlace) are. Although these types of sites attract lots of users, not everyone knows how to use them effectively, especially when it c…

Interviews can be stressful part of the job search process. A way to alleviate some of that stress is to make sure that you are well prepared. Below are some common questions that people often feel tense about and sometimes need some coaching on how they might best answer them.
1) What are your strengths/weaknesses?
2) Why are you leaving your current position?
3) What are your salary expectations?
The first question above is a bit of a tricky one and the interviewer is looking for an answer…

There is an old saying that goes, “It’s not what you know, it’s who you know”. So, how do you tap into the hidden job market if the people you know aren’t able to help you connect with a job in the career of your choice? Well, they probably know someone that does. Have you heard of the six degrees of separation? The six degrees of separation is a theory that you are only six people away from knowing everyone on the planet. In fact a trivia game was created a few years ago called, “The Six Degree…
