There are die hards out there who still insist the best way to get a job is the old fashion way– newspaper ads and word-of-mouth. While I agree on the word-of-mouth (a.k.a. networking) point, let’s face it, the reality of finding a “career” through a newspaper ad is slim.
So, if you are still unfamiliar with social marketing…

The next time you poo-poo technology (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn or others), think about how they may actually be able to help you instead of waste your time.
I read a great post about using Twitter to find jobs,
Twittering for Jobs (which I found on Twitter, by-the-way).
There were a couple of good take aways for me:
One, use all media forms for your search: print, web, radio, TV, mobile, RSS, ne…

If you have ever heard me speak about Twitter, you know I am passionate about this social media platform and its possibilities. I am also an advocate of Twitter's use as a form of internal company communication as well as company branding and marketing possibilities. However, there are a handful of instances and examples that force me to draw the line especially when used in the Human Resource industry.
* Terminations. An employee of the Doner Advertising Agency learned via Twitter from @thefou…

Since I've been blogging and more active in social networking, I've had some neat experiences. I want to share them to help you understand how it can work for anyone.
LinkedIn:
I was looking for a contact name at a specific company for a job seeking friend. I sent an linkedin invitation to connect and the response I got was "call me, we need to talk". The phone call resulted in an attempt to try and recruit ME. Now, all I was trying to do was send this guy's profile over to the company contact…

The famous U.K. university, the University of Cambridge, recently published a paper on how they developed a software tool that takes Facebook profiles that are publicly accessible (and other publicly available information via search engines) to mine/infer private data.
From the article: "We focused on inferring information about a whole social graph...lists of every person and the connections between them," such as group memberships they had in common or geographic ties, says J…

According to Wikipedia, a mullet is a unisex hair style that is short in the front and long in the back. The mullet began making appearances in the popular media in the 1960s and 1970s but did not catch on with the masses until the early 1980s.
Job seekers can learn from those that sport this fashionable cut when managing their online brand. A popular saying when describing a mullet comes to mind-
"Business in the front. Party in the back."
Wise words when considering your online brand while…

I remember when Google first came out, I could (and still can) find everything under the sun. I also remember a friend telling me how he googled himself. My initial reaction was, “You did what?!” When he told me what it meant, I was relieved but also perplexed. I asked myself, ‘why would anyone search for themselves on the Internet?’ Now keep in mind that this was nearly 10 years ago and googling yourself was relatively new and social networking as common. When I finally came around to googling…

Want to communicate your subject matter expertise to a targeted audience, or would a scatter shot approach be more effective?
If you want a tightly targeted audience, that will have a high likelihood of facing problems that you are uniquely qualified to solve, then check out Facebook’s groups, one of its most powerful features.

So what’s all the fuss over Web 2.0?

While going about my daily search for
great entry-level jobs to write about, I came across a Facebook Flyer ad for
YardBarker's entry-level jobs. I was impressed that they were using Facebook as a recruitment medium (employers really aren't taking advantage of this yet), but I think that YardBarker swung and missed on this one. With a few alterations to their ad, they could have come a…
