How many interviews would you say it takes to secure a job? 1, 2, 5000? The truth is that when it comes to securing a job, the interview doesn't end until your last day at the company. Everyday that… Continue

Someone referred me to an article in Time Magazine entitled How Skype is Changing the Job Interview. The title gives it away: the article is all about how Skype is seeing a lot more action in the interviewing process for organizations. After all, it’s free to use (so long as both parties have it) and it simulates an actual face-to-face meeting. Seems like a logical step, right?
Video conferencing is becoming more and more prevalent in businesses for internal communication, especially now with co… Continue
Job seekers can now add Botox to the job search checklist just after resume and coverletter. In an increasingly youth-obsessed culture, job seekers look to physical enhancements to appear more confident and youthful in the job search. These enhancements vary from hair coloring, weight loss, Botox, and even plastic surgery.
And as the number of unemployed climbs above the 16 million mark, job seekers are becoming more conscious of ways to differentiate themselves from other candidates beyond exp… Continue
Last week while shopping with my daughter for a homecoming dress, I began to talk with the sales associate outside the changing room. How did she like her job? How did she get hired? What did she enjoy about working there? My children hate it when I approach perfect strangers like this, but we had a great conversation, and I found out that she was friends with my other daughter's boyfriend. One thing led to another and the next day my daughter met with the manager for an interview.
Another time… Continue

We’ve heard so much lately about the importance of the online image of job seekers and why it is imperative for them to clean up their reputations before any potential employer searches them out. Niche businesses have even cropped up to help with this process and to turn a negative image into a more positive one.
Many companies are also spending significant resources to monitor and “fix” their online image, overcoming negative customer reviews and competitor backstabbing.
Nevertheless, although… Continue

In military terms, the Rules of Engagement determine when and how much force should be applied to a given situation. The amount of force applied varies with increasing intensity depending on the level of resistance that the troops are coming up against. An example of how to respond to a level 3 resistance according to the US Marines' ROE goes as follows:
Level 3: Resistant (Active). The subject initially demonstrates… Continue
You just walked out of your third interview with XYZ Company. It ended with lunch at a fancy restaurant with the CFO, a Director, and a manager. Everyone was smiling as you shook hands and said farewell. And to top it off, the last thing that the CFO said to you was, "We'll be in touch." You're feeling pretty good. In fact, you feel great. Based on the number of interv… Continue
We are trying to start a new job search acronym that we hope goes viral and transforms interview rooms across America and maybe the world. That acronym is LARA. It stands for Listen Attentively Respond Accordingly and you can say you heard it hear first--unless you've heard it elsewhere. If you did, please let me know because I googled it and was shocked not… Continue

Your job search has paid off and you have been invited in for an interview. Here are four tips to help you prepare for the interview and make it a success.
Do your homework - One of the top complaints recruiters and hiring managers have about job seekers is in their lack of preparation for the interview. Do you research, visit the company's web page, make yourself familiar with the products or services that they provide. Read the latest press releases, pick out an interesting, recent fac… Continue

I would be the last one to suggest you leave your interview preparation to the last minute. So, I hesitated when I saw the title of this book and its subhead: "Prepare tonight and get the job tomorrow." Hmm...Maybe not a good idea to suggest this tact to job seekers? In fact, the authors note that, ideally, you will spend a week or two preparing for an interview.
However, I like the gist of the book -… Continue

As crazy as this may sound, it is really important to practice your interview answers out loud.
You may have spent hours rehearsing the answers in your head but when you go to open your mouth, seldom does the answer that comes out sound like what you were practicing.
Whether it is in front of the mirror, in a networking group, in a workshop or with your cousin Isabelle in Massachusetts over the phone, just do it.
I had an actor in one of my classes who told us about the 3 steps actors use to… Continue
We all hear about “persistence pays off” and “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”. We are told to be persistent about what we want and if we really try hard enough, we’ll get it. But at whose expense? And when is it time to let go and move on?
I’ve recently come in contact with someone who wants to sell me something. This is some… Continue
People have asked me why I don't talk about informational interviews in my networking workshops. The answer is that they ARE a form of networking.
Networking is simply having conversations with people you know. As job seekers, networking becomes defined as looking for a job. It is absolutely more than this.
An Informational Interview, probably a better term to use would be Informational Meeting, means talking with someone about what they do and/or what their company does to learn and get quest… Continue

With the current economic conditions, most companies are looking for ways to cut corners and save money. One way companies are saving money is by how and where interviews are conducted. For many companies that are looking at candidates outside the local area, the interview process can be an expense one.
In the past would have had to bring candidates to their location for interviews which mean covering travel, hot… Continue
