Almost every day now, I receive requests for connections on linkedin. I think linkedin is a wonderful tool…but people don’t respect some basic rules.
Actually these are common rules. When you meet someone at a networking venue, do you say… Continue
Do you have a plan? According to a recent survey hosted by Robert Half, 82% of those surveyed said they were ready. The survey also asked who had an updated resume. 44% said it has been over a year since they've updated that document. Yikes! Almost half the people hadn't touched their resume in over a year. They aren't ready.
OH, my gosh! I knew LinkedIn was a great tool, but this is amazing. How many of you have used the Search Companies function on LinkedIn?
In my search, I found over 4,000 within my 1st and 2nd degree contacts and over 900 companies listed in Rochester, NY. So what are you waiting for.
It is so simple.
1) Click on Search by Companies
2) Then, you can see on the right hand side of the screen the ability to filter or specify your search by location, company size, company industry, or companies wi… Continue

First, let's frame the question. "You are employed" could mean you've secured a job solely for income purposes. Or you've taken a job that is just that, a job, not something you are passionate about. Or, it is a short-term or contracted position. Or it is your dream vocation! If any of these apply, great. Next, what does job search mean? NETWORKING. How do you continue to network (for your career) when you are working?
The simplest answer is to just carve out time each week or month to do it. B… Continue

Everywhere I turn I cannot get away from the ever evolving trend of the social networking process for job searches. Countless comments and posts speaking to the rage and what it does for recruiters and job seekers. The issue I keep finding myself looking at is the lack of a detailed strategy. How do you leverage these networks? What is the best way to connect and get tied into a company you want to work for? What if you do not have a job - how do you use these tools to land your next position? T… Continue

One of the trends sweeping the career development world is personal branding. Personal branding is the way people market themselves and promote their “reputation” to others. The term is generally attributed to Tom Peters, who first discussed the concept of personal branding in a 1997 article “The Brand Called You.” According to Peters, the way you create your brand is to differentiate yourself, communicate your values and character, and build a reputation. The success of your personal brand will… Continue

I get tired of reading the hundreds of new posts on job search sometimes, do you? I also don't have time to sit and listen to an interview with a leading expert on interviewing or job search (however, I did listen to some of Liz Lynch's interview with Jason Alba). Video's are too long sometimes, I want them to get to the point.
I've known about Slideshare and I've heard that it could be a nice addition to your LinkedIn profile. It wasn't until I came across this post,… Continue
I have learned a lot over the past few years about the way people work. After knocking on thousands of doors and placing hundreds of people in jobs, I came to understand why the top sales reps were bringing in six figure salaries and why some people are never unemployed. It all boiled down to perceived right-time value.
People often ascribe being in the “right place at the right time” to luck, but I have another theory. Being in the right place at the right time really means offering perceived… Continue
Is your LinkedIn Profile Up to the Job?
by Natalee Roan, CEO of Vjournal.com
As I cruise through LinkedIn, it's clear that many people don't recognize what LinkedIn has essentially become - your de facto electronic resume. Whether you're looking for a job or not, at 36 million members and growing LinkedIn is now one of the first places other professionals go to find out more about you. Yet of the profiles I've viewed in the past 24 hours, a larg… Continue

For those of you still on the fence about LinkedIn, they just came out with another product enhancement that will automatically email your profile to recruiters who post an ad on the LinkedIn job board. So if someone posted an ad for technology sales in NY than your profile could show up automatically in an email to that recruiter. Talk about job matching.
So make… Continue
My article about why you CV is boring and ineffective aroused a lot of interest and comments especially from people on Linkedin (I had more than 400 views cumulated for this article!).

* "Your network = your R&D, your marketing, your sales team"

Chris Brogan did it. He defined how to build a platform in which to be seen and heard. Trusted too. You may have heard how important it is to have an on-line presence. As a job seeker, you want to stand out from the crowd. You want to be known for having something valuable to offer. You want to know what the trends are in your industry and occupation. There should be a strategy.

There are die hards out there who still insist the best way to get a job is the old fashion way– newspaper ads and word-of-mouth. While I agree on the word-of-mouth (a.k.a. networking) point, let’s face it, the reality of finding a “career” through a newspaper ad is slim.
So, if you are still unfamiliar with social marketing… Continue
I came across a post on the LinkedIn blog that shows a study of how people are getting hired. This graph shows you where companies are getting candidates.
So if you are a job seeker you need to make sure you are part of these sources. Job hunting in 2009 means taking an 'all-inclusive' approach to being found. Good luck. Continue
