The best way to introduce yourself to a company with which you would like to work, find a company for which you think you’d like to work or to target companies for the purpose of networking into a position, openings notwithstanding, is to know the “
What, Where and How you can help the company”. I can give you a better-than-even chance of getting in the door to introduce yourself
and possibly creating a job which is right for you. It’ll take some time and careful preparation…

Number 10: The position for which you are interviewing is vacant. Well run companies don’t create vacancies. Before letting someone go or sensing that someone wants to go, good management … a well-run company, will be ready with a replacement
Number 9: When asked how the company measures its…

The PunkRock Champagne Holiday Social Tweetup
Many people ask me how to network more effectively and I guess I have to keep reminding myself that networking does not come as naturally to many people as it does to others. Well when it comes to networking, my Twitter friends Stephanie Lloyd and…

First in a series of Tough Interview Scenarios by Rob Taub of Job Search Corner
From blatant … “Greatest weakness”; “weakest attribute”; “most significant failure” … to soft … “what might your previous employer say …?” … even softer …“you certainly seem to have a lot of strengths, but we understand no one is perfect…” The question will come one way or another, everyone knows it, yet still befuddled by it.
There have been many Rules of Thumb (R.O.T.) developed over the years, from making…

I've seen professionals who not only can appear confident, but who ARE confident, very successful sales professionals for example, fall flat on their faces in interviews. It's a very different ball game.
Many of the most skilled and successful professionals are victims here. I only reference sales professionals because they are the people likely to understand the dynamics of an interview for it is like the sales call. Unfortunately, even they may sometimes forget the basics of "selling".…

Job search phone phobia is very common. Here are some ideas that could turn your phone into the feather-light tool it should be and not a 500 lb weight.
By
CAREEREALISM-Approved Expert, Rob Taub
There are many types of phone calls. The calls that give people the most trouble are the “Introductory Calls”. The purpose of the call is to make you known. The goal is to get an appointment or at least another call of longer duration. This type of call is infamously known a…

Job Search Marketing is a lot of work but is doesn’t have to be complicated. Comprehensive, “yes”; complicated, “no”, yet so many people cause themselves a lot of difficulty and stress. I’m going to try to make the concept of job search marketing simple for you to understand. I won’t be able to make it simple for you to undertake, however. It will always be hard work. Nevertheless, with understanding, maybe you won’t feel as though it’s an uphill battle.

With Thanksgiving here, I decided to get festive in my interview analogies by introducing the
Turducken as a model for job seekers to consider the next time they sit down for an interview. For those you who have…

Are you unemployed and depressed? Or do you know someone who is unemployed and depressed. Here is a bit of a perspective for them:
Heed Martin Luther's advice. He knew a thing or two about hard times and said that "I cannot just sit at home ... to wait till a fried chicken flies into my mouth."
By sitting at home, you won't be bringing home the bacon (or the fried chicken.)
But what can you do during the upcoming holiday season?
Here are some ideas:
1, With the holiday season coming up, peo…

Do you have a plan? According to a recent survey hosted by Robert Half, 82% of those surveyed said they were ready. The survey also asked who had an updated resume. 44% said it has been over a year since they've updated that document. Yikes! Almost half the people hadn't touched their resume in over a year. They aren't ready.
It certainly isn't all about the resume. But

Some see networking as a chore. Others see it as a waste of time. A huge mass of social blather that leads to nothing. Those people get frustrated and get stuck in their job search.
They haven't yet figured out that networking is now a lifelong opportunity. An opportunity to build out your influence in the world. And to reach more people that might need your help at the same time.
For those who see socializing, I see relationship building. Research. To understand what your net

The best way to introduce yourself to a company that doesn’t appear to be actively looking is to know the “
What, where and
how you can help the company”. I can give you a better-than-even chance to get the door to open to be able to introduce yourself, perhaps even create a job that is just right for you. It will take time and careful preparation but it will pay a dividend.
Step 1 – Functional strengths: Begin by listing all your functional strengths across the top of a she…

You want a new job. You want it fast. How will YOU make it happen?
Sometimes it feels like securing a new job is out of our control. I hear too often today people say "There aren't any jobs out there". I know there are jobs out there and so do you. The trick is finding them. Like a good old fashioned Easter Egg Hunt; you have to really look an…

Sometimes we take advice literally. I've heard career experts recommend to job seekers that they should line up networking and informational meetings. Yep, I recommend this too. However, what we aren't saying is to call someone and ask "Can I have an informational meeting with you?" or "Can I network with you?" These two questions are akin to "Do you have a job for me?". All these questions are focused on YOUR needs and wants and desires, not the person you are talking to.
When you are asking s…

People with a background in selling understand the job search process. They have lived it daily as they sold whatever product or service they represented for their previous employers. Networking uses those same principles.
Identify your target audience:
This means identifying which companies need your services. If you were selling something, you would develop a large pipeline of potential customers. You would do this by identifying what they are currently doing and using. You would iden…

If you or anyone you know has been on the job market for any length of time, you will understand that for most people the hardest part of the job search is staying motivated throughout the process. Traditionally, we are taught to work for rewards. At the completion of every action, there is an almost inherent expectation of some sort of fee…

Last week while shopping with my daughter for a homecoming dress, I began to talk with the sales associate outside the changing room. How did she like her job? How did she get hired? What did she enjoy about working there? My children hate it when I approach perfect strangers like this, but we had a great conversation, and I found out that she was friends with my other daughter's boyfriend. One thing led to another and the next day my daughter met with the manager for an interview.
Another time…

An Easy 5-Step Method for Choosing a Major & Ultimately Defining Future Job Satisfaction
Start with the end in mind. As with writing a speech, you determine what your objective is and what you want your audience to have when they leave the auditorium and THEN you begin to write your speech, make sense? Same with the job search and too, picking a major, internships, related clubs and activities, and more: You begin with the end in mind
Every step you take, even in the moment,…

You are nervous. You have seen the news and realize that long-term security with any company is no guarantee. Perhaps your own company is undergoing a belt-tightening or you have heard rumors of “company restructuring.” In any case, you believe that now may be a good time to investigate potential opportunities with another company.
If you are concerned about future job security, don’t procrastinate and hope that things will turn out for the best. Start now! It is better to be prepared for a cha…

You're job search is not doomed but without networking you are doomed to suffer a longer more difficult one.
Although networking is important it is only one piece in a multiple-channel job search marketing strategy. You help yourself best by working ALL your channels. Some other channels are,
· Online networking portholes such as LinkedIn, Facebook and MySpace;
· Recruiters and Search Firms;
· Job sites such as Indeed, Ladders and CareerBuilder;
· Targeted mailing and Informational I…
