An interview is your opportunity to sell yourself. Regardless of how much you may look the part, you need to answer the questions correctly to get the job. Interviewers ask key questions and look for certain types of answers. Honesty is always the best policy, but remember that it is okay…

During this recession, there has been much discussion of the exorbitant salaries paid to executives. CEOs of failed companies are walking away secure, while the employees of these companies are losing their shirts, or rather, their homes.
According to The Corporate Library, CEOs’ salaries fell last year
for the first time in the previous six…

40 IS THE NEW 30?
You know how we all keep hearing,
“40 is the NEW 30!”?– well, I’m not quite sure how much of that I really believe, maybe it is in Hollywood– but in the workforce, aging seems to be something people want to disguise and play down.
However, good news in on the rise to the 40-somethings!
It used to be that the main candidates for corporate relocation were 30-somethings looking to move up the corporate ladder. Not anymore. According to Robert Scally of Workforce.c…

This was a real call I took yesterday. The conversation went like this:
Caller: “Hi, um, my name is John. I want to know about your resume service and when you can finish it. Because I need it soon.”
Me: “Hi John. Well, let’s skip to your most important question. How quickly do you need it?”
John: “I need it by tomorrow. I saw a job position I want to apply fo…

You are not alone! Cover letters can be difficult for people to write... even tougher than the resume itself. Why is that? What makes a good cover letter?
Cover letters
don't have to be impossible. There really aren’t many ‘rules’ to writing them. You can let your personality shine through while positiv…

Some days we just need a do-over. Nothing is going right, your day keeps getting worse and you wish you could crawl back under the blankets and wait for tomorrow -- a fresh new day! But wait good people, there is help!

We all hear about “persistence pays off” and “if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again”. We are told to be persistent about what we want and if we really try hard enough, we’ll get it. But at whose expense? And when is it time to
let go and move on?
I’ve recently come in contact with someone who wants to sell me something. This is some…

Keywords are an
essential piece to a well-written
resume. Why? Because they are the words that describe what you do. They also let the reader know immediately whether or not you are a potential candidate f…

There are die hards out there who still insist the best way to get a job is the old fashion way– newspaper ads and word-of-mouth. While I agree on the word-of-mouth (a.k.a. networking) point, let’s face it, the reality of finding a “career” through a newspaper ad is slim.
So, if you are still unfamiliar with social marketing…

I was listening to a client recently tell me how she is in this job that she hates. The boss is horrible to her and she now has ulcers, which she (and her doctor) suspect comes from the job stress. She doesn’t want to quit because she is afraid of not being able to find another comparable job.
Even in this t…

TIPS FOR a Successful JOB FAIR
I was at the Detroit “Good Morning America / Women for Hire” job fair the other day. There were about 25 résumé evaluators and approximately 5000 job seekers. They literally were lined up outside the doors at 3:30am. Talk about motivated people. Wow.
I was really impressed by the amount of professionalism, ambition and previous success that most of the folks had. There were just a few people that could have used a few pointers. So here they are:
1- DRESS AS IF Y…

OLYMPICS and JOB SEARCH
I stumbled upon the blog of Adam Kreek, a member of the Canadian Olympic Row team, when I read about the training that he puts in to get to where he is today. Here is an excerpt from his blog:
“The pain experienced while rowing is similar to middle distance running, biking really hard or speed skating. Your legs burn and scream for oxygen, while your lungs wheeze with your heart struggling to transport renewed blood to the complaining body parts. Suffering is the…

I am the first to admit that networking with a bunch of strangers is not easy when you are shy. Early in my career, I was in sales and would literally have to force myself to cold call. It was daily torture. I finally admitted to myself that maybe I was in the wrong field, and no, it was not hereditary (many family members were in sales). I was never that suave, chatty, BS'er-type that seemed to dominate my lineage.
Networking when you are shy is worse than a root canal.
I understand th…

It starts quietly.
You hear rumblings about it from colleagues; it's all anyone can talk about. Company morale is low and people are getting panicky. Suddenly, they let go of 25 people in your department with more layoffs expected. 2 months later, you get your pink slip. You don't have any prospects in sight, everyone you know is laid off, and your resume has been severely neglected.
What do you do now?
For starters, you need to release some emotion and frustration, so plan on going…

Well, if you live in Michigan, or anywhere else in our country, let's face it: the economy stinks. People are getting laid off and companies are closing down or outsourcing to other countries practically on a daily basis. So, what good would hiring a professional resume service do for you? EVERYTHING.
It's understandable to be cautious about hiring a resume writer, especially online where you can't visually shake a hand or see an office full of certificates, awards, books, or anything else that…
