This morning, CTV news (a major Canadian news channel) profiled a Canadian guitarist whose career has skyrocketed after producing some Youtube videos. They feature airport baggage handlers hurling guitars in the air
Dave Caroll, a native of Halifax, Nova Scotia, claims that United Airlines smashed his guitar.
After a year of fruitless attempts to rectify the situation, Caroll warned the airline that he would fight back by producing a triology of songs that feature United's name.
To date, four million people have viewed the videos on Youtube.
Don't mistake the message here.
Kudos to Dave and his soaring career. That said, I'm sure all, if not the career professionals who belong to this site will agree that we ought to choose our battles wisely, and to use social media strategically and respectfully to enhance our digital identity.
In my opinion, Dave Caroll emerged with a stronger career in a few ways by using Youtube in a few ways:
1. He used a personal brand of sorts to prove that social media sites like Utube do garner public attention.
Newsmedia in North America and in the UK have published his story.
2. He used the opportunity to promote his own product, his music.
3. He demonstrated the importance of good customer service. When you're looking for work, you want to evaluate a company before you apply and not have a one-sided experience to the sole benefit of the employer.
In the aftermath of the videos, United supposedly has decided to respond and to compensate Dave Caroll.
Social media really has a power of influence. Whether using social media to enhance your digital identity or to malign it is a personal choice.
